Windshield cutout: for what?

So I'm assisting on C-182A windshield replacement, and now it's time to install the flashing/gussets between the windshield and the Wing roots.

Why is there a cutout of the plexiglass at the leading edge? Seems to me a more secure and leak-proof design would be for no cutout to exist. Unless some 182 models have a need, or a maintenance procedure requires access, I don't understand what the cutout is for. Can someone enlighten us?

Thanks. Steve

Steve without talking to the manufacturer of the plexiglass you're using most logical choice it's stress releif so that as the window moves around it doesn't crack right through that bend area radius. I'm sure you're figuring out you're only want to do a window once. . I had one crack on a TR 182 I was installing just as I was doing the finishing pushes to get into the channel at the top of the cabin. The wing root fairing should do a good job of sealing up any gaps you might have.

  • Thank you Carl.

I never considered crack prevention. Now I and perhaps a few more folks know. πŸ‘

This restoration is coming along great. Only hangup now seems to be those damn bladder roof snaps. An IA once told me to forget about those far outboard ones if they can't be reached. Just be sure to remove those snaps from their bladder grommet if you do. Having a hard time with even the aft inboard snaps now. 😧Even removed the fuel pickup tube and crossover vent tube connection just to slacken up the bladder. We'll get it. Someday. πŸ˜„

    Thanks again Carl.

Yeah those are in a special pain in the butt. One of the big secrets or normal operating is to do it on a sunny day and have the tank outside in the sun get everything good and warm you do get a little bit of stretch out of it. But I swear and everybody else probably does too that there's no consistency where they put the snaps. Carl
